woman with pain due to tooth sensitivity

Would you love a tall, hot cup of coffee in the morning but decline it because of the jolt of pain that you experience? Do you watch your family members enjoy a bowl of ice cream but you refrain because indulging is a painful experience? Sensitive teeth can limit the foods and beverages that we enjoy, and if not treated, can have a negative impact on your life.

Healthy teeth have a very solid structure to them that keeps out sensitivity, cavities, and decay. Enamel, the hardest substance in the human body, protects the roots and crowns of the teeth. In the gum line, the very sensitive parts of the teeth are found: the cementum and the dentin. The dentin is the layer of the teeth that contains microscopic tubules, which are highly sensitive as they are connected directly to the roots of the teeth. The cementum layer is supposed to surround the dentin layer as added protection. When teeth are damaged or gums have begun to recede from the enamel of the teeth, this results in hyper tooth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity can be treated, and in most cases the treatment is very simple to implement. Desensitizing toothpaste is the very first step in treatment. This toothpaste contains compounds that help block transmission of sensation from the tooth surface to the nerve. In order to achieve results, desensitizing toothpaste must be used regularly. Changing your brushing habits is also required. Brushing vigorously back and forth (especially if done with a hard bristled toothbrush) can cause the gums to recede from the teeth. By using gentle, circular brush strokes and by using a soft bristled toothbrush or an electric toothbrush, the gums will begin to lower back into place, covering the sensitive layers of the teeth. Avoiding acidic, carbonated, and sugary foods and beverages will also help sensitive teeth to heal. Acid and sugar eat away at the enamel of the teeth, also exposing sensitive layers of the teeth.
