The gum tissues inside the mouth play a vital role in your oral health. The gums not only help hold the teeth securely in place, but they also protect the roots and life of the teeth. Gum recession is a serious oral health concern because of how vulnerable it leaves your smile. It is also a serious concern due to how painful the side effects of this condition can be.

Tooth sensitivity is the most common symptom of gum recession. Each individual tooth has its own root system and nerve fibers connecting it to the rest of the body. If a tooth is damaged at its root, the tooth will eventually die and will fall out on its own or will need to be extracted. If you experience twinges of pain or discomfort when eating or drinking hot or cold foods and beverages, it is essential that you bring this to your dentist’s attention. Gum recession can be treated and reversed with early intervention.

What causes gum recession?

  • Overly aggressive brushing.
While it is important to brush the teeth at least twice a day, too much vigor and friction will damage the gums and cause them to pull away from the teeth. Be gentle when brushing.
  • Inadequate oral hygiene.
Flossing is an imperative part of your oral care. Bacteria-laden plaque builds up on your teeth each day, and if you are not removing plaque by flossing, your gums are under constant assault.
  • Gum disease.
When plaque builds up and hardens at your gum line, the acids begin to eat their way through your gum tissues. Periodontal disease is the irreversible result of damage to your gums, and it is generally caused by poor oral health and the lack of proper oral hygiene over time.
  • Hormonal changes.
Fluctuations in hormone levels have a direct impact on gum tissues. Women are especially susceptible to hormone-related gum recession due to the huge hormonal fluctuations that they experience through puberty, pregnancies, perimenopause, and menopause.
  • Crooked teeth.
A straight smile is more than just an attractive feature – it is easier to clean. Misaligned teeth are difficult to brush and floss for proper plaque and bacteria removal.
  • Genetics.
Certain characteristics of your oral health are pre-determined by genetics. If your parents suffered from gum recession, there is a high chance that you will also.
